A hydrothermal vent releasing a warm chemical plume into dark water

Vents

Vents inject reductant and ambient-relative heat into the water. They create productive possibility, but not food on their own.

What a vent provides

Each authored vent has separate chemical and thermal outputs. The current carries both away from the source while cold background water gradually absorbs the thermal excess.

Where to place one

Anchor vents on rock beside open, grazable margins. A sealed chamber may collect reductant, but ocean reactant must also reach nearby exposed rock before film can grow.

Why several are useful

Several moderate vents create separated feeding grounds. That gives grazed film somewhere to recover and gives Sleels a reason to migrate between patches.

What a vent does not do

A vent is not edible and does not guarantee a viable habitat. Geometry, ocean reactant, current, sediment and grazing pressure still decide the result.
